As the rainy season begins, you find many organizations busy with the plantation programmes. The word ‘Mega Plantation Programme’ finds a permanent place as headline in the daily newspaper for more than a month. Week long Environment programmes are being organised in every village, block, city and state level. Politicians, Ministers, Cine-celebrities, top Govt. Officials, Corporate bigwigs, all seem to be in green mood. Pledges of Environmental Responsibility are committed. Awareness programmes are also in full swing. Debates, Art Competitions, Quiz programmes, etc. become a daily event in schools. Truly, rain does bring back life in people.
It feels good to find so many people concerned about the environment. And I hope if this continues, very soon we will free from the fear of Global Warming and its deadly impact. We can again enjoy the six seasons on the earth. The Koel bird will be singing melodiously in spring and Peacock will dance in rain. The sky will be looking beautiful with rainbow. Oh, I wish to be in my dream for ever.
But all that glitters is not gold. What we see in newspaper and other media are mostly an act of eyewash. Have we ever pondered about what happens to those saplings after the plantation? Have we ever checked the growth of the planted sapling? The responsibility doesn’t stops at the plantation. It is only the beginning. Surprisingly, in most of the cases, we find that the responsibility ends at the beginning itself. The saplings are left on their own fate. Whether they survive or not, is no one’s concern.Now the question arises as with what right we destroy so many saplings? Is it not as bad as illegally cutting down of trees? To me, it is indeed an act of Criminal Offence. We ought to be accountable for such destruction of saplings.
